Yeah I figured out the bgcolor thing. Only problem is it won't have the exact color. For example, if you set to #FF0000, you will always get a blended controlbar (pink). It blends with the alpha channel of the black controlbar. The loss of the rollovers is very important for accessiblity reasons. Not all users of our clients sites are internet savvy and the rollover stats make it obvious what is clickable.
We love 4.0 from a technical aspect. We just have to convince our client to either go with a less customizable skin or pay for custom skinning.
BTW, when you set a bgcolor in the Setup Wizard, the preview is correct but it doesn't update the swfObject 1.5 code block (embed code block is correct). Also you may want to include the inverted.swf in the player zip. It took some digging to find it by just guessing the url at skins.longtail.com.

Hmm, the bgcolor trick works exactly as the backcolor for the 3.xx player though. Let me fix that by setting the '3d gradient' transparency a little lower.
Let me also make sure that rollovers indeed appear by first using a dark grey and moving to complete black on rollover.
I'll fix the wizard and make the inverted skin more visible!
